OâDwyer Cheshire Home was opened in 1976 as the fulfilment of a dream of the late Hon. Paul OâDwyer, long-time activist and human rights campaigner in the USA. The centre was built on the grounds of his family home, set in landscaped gardens in a peaceful rural setting, with Swinford close by and Castlebar some 20 minutes drive away.
The home caters for 20 adult residents with physical disabilities offering 24-hour care and support from trained staff, including nursing services. We offer several therapies including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, aromatherapy and reflexology therapy. Divers ional activities are organised with leisure and social support from volunteers.
Project:
The theme of the project is âLearning through listeningâ, to offer and encourage you the volunteer a cultural experience, both in language and working with people who have disabilities. The project will bring an awareness to both volunteer, residents and staff, the opportunities of meeting people with other cultures, perhaps opportunities of social skills, confidence building both to the volunteer and the people in the home. To enhance friendship and create new opportunities to volunteers and their family & friends who visit, which might not have had the opportunity to visit our country without the EVS project, learn our language and become closely involved in community activities.
Living Accommodation:
OâDwyer Cheshire provides an apartment for all volunteers, which consists of 3 single bedrooms, living & kitchen area with utility area and 2 bathrooms.
All bed linen and towels are provided.
Meals are provided by OâDwyer Cheshire, but if volunteers wish to cook, cooking facilities are available in their own living area.
Cooker, Fridge, Washing Machine & Dryer is provided in the apartment
Smoking is prohibited in the building.
Activities:
In OâDwyer Cheshire Home we host a wide range of daily activities in the home, this will give you the opportunity to experience new challenges, become more involved in the community through local community events, visit museums and attend national sporting events which will strengthen your cultural value, A number of our residents attend training centres, participate in diploma courses and consumer meetings on disabilities on a national basis â this will hopefully give you the opportunities to learn and perhaps make you aware of educational prospects within our country and may have a life lasting impact.
